Here’s what happened. I had at least three ideas for a newsletter this week and then realized that I had a deadline and that it was the week before school starts. We are wrapping up a family vacation and have to pack everything and travel and then unpack, etc. Basically, like birds, we migrate for the summer, but now we must return to Dallas.
Fall is my favorite season, but it’s only mid-August. It’s 100 degrees in Dallas. The end of summer feels especially sad this year. As many of you know, I was quite sick in the early summer and spent most of it bed-bound. It wasn’t what I (or anyone else!) wanted, and most of the summer flew by in a medicated state. This may have been for the best since it was also a difficult summer for, I think, everyone who cares about democracy.
I want to highlight just one thing, which is the ongoing struggle in Atlanta over the construction of “cop city” and plans to lease the Atlanta City Jail instead of closing and repurposing it. Micah Herskind is the person I follow on this. He wrote about “Cop City” with great insight and has been at the forefront of the movement to educate the public. There is so much at stake. And, on top of the proposed mega-cop complex, the city of Atlanta is going to lease beds in the city jail to the county sheriff. Please read this.
I will be back with a longer newsletter next week. Thank you and please take care.
