The AK in AK-47 stands for "automat kalashnikova" and Kalashnikov is the brand that produces them.
My understanding is thats the origin but no longer who makes modern rifles sold in the US.
IIRC there's a US branch of the company with the same name that has nothing to do with the Russian origins at this point
